Why Digital Audio Books ?
Digital technology permits voice to be stored in digital MP3 format. Using this
technology, a book of 300 pages can be stored in just one CD. Each CD can be heard
for 20 hours and cost of a CD is Rupees 10 only. All the 12 books required for three
years of BA degree course will be 12 CDs which can be carried in a small hand bag.
With a portable MP3 player, Blind students will have pocket library of books they
need for education and competitive examinations. They can listen to them whenever
they want, wherever they want, and which ever lesson in the books they want. All
the book they need can be copied from a PC or internet FREE of cost. On the other
hand, Audio tapes for one book of 300 pages require 20 tapes and costs Rs 400, compared
to Rs 10 for one CD. Hence Digital Audio Books have been selected by Samrita Trust
as the most appropriate, economical media to convert books required by blind students
in colleges and schools.

Plan
Samrita Trust plans to institutionalize use of digital audio books. To meet
this goal, Samrita Trust supplies one master set of digital audio books(CDs) to
junior and degree colleges in Andhra Pradesh to be kept in the college library as
reference books. The colleges will download the master copy of audio books in a
desktop PC and make copies in a CD writer. The colleges can make copies equal to
the number of blind students on their rolls. After making copies, the college library
will issue one set of the audio books required by each blind student for the academic
year, like any other books. Colleges can also copy the audio books in the MP3 players
issued to blind students. Samrita Trust has already supplied one set each of digital
audio books to 15 Junior colleges and 15 degree colleges in Andhra Pradesh. Click
